IESR 200 - Soil Science (3-credits)
March 2026 (in person at Yellowhead Tribal College, Edmonton, AB)
This online introductory 3-credit course is offered through Yellowhead Tribal College and taught by Dr. Konstantin Dlusskiy. This course is part of the Indigenous Stewardship and Reclamation program but could be taken as a stand-alone course. In this course, students are introduced to the study of the Earth and issues related to earth forming processes, with an emphasis placed on the geology of western Canada.
The first half of the course will deal with major elements of geology related to the Earth and rock-forming processes. The second half of the course will cover practical applications of geology, such as industrial uses (mining, oil and gas extraction), water supply from the earth (water wells), aggregate (gravel) and limestone (concrete). Other topics will include issues associated with subsurface and groundwater contamination, and mechanisms of treatment of contaminants.

Absolutely great course provided by a knowledgeable, respected and passionate Soil Scientist and nice guy. Respectful of time and ensuring all students have ample opportunity to interact and ask questions. Approached subject like true science - always gracefully accepting criticism of concept and was able to smoothly transition the question into a discussion to challenge both sides respectfully. Great course for new and old.

Thank you for your dedicated instruction and taking the time to share your knowledge in such a committed way. I really enjoyed the course and look forward to working with you in the future or taking other courses.

I loved the class, thank you for a great learning experience. The field trip was fantastic!

Fantastic learning opportunity for someone who took Soil (Intro Soils, Soil Fertility, and Soil Microbiology) courses in the past, but had never taken a Soil Classification course. In this course, the instructor covered a LOT of material in two days. More information than I had ever received during grad school on Soil Classification. Konstantin is a fantastic instructor, and he went through the course material at a good pace. He was easy to listen to and the material was easy to follow.

I enjoyed every minute of your lecture, meeting with you and other classmates during the field trip, as well as your marvelous sense of humor.
